Get Up, Get Out of Bed

podcast table time May 12, 2021

At 4:30am my phone alarm goes off with the words BIGGER PURPOSE to remind me that I am getting up at this time to fulfill a bigger purpose for myself.

Of course I would love to lay in bed all warm and snug in my cozy sheets and down comforter but my getting out of bed serves me so much more. I am able to live a bigger purpose.

The bigger purpose is to get myself up and alive before my kids are awake. I have learned that waking up with them puts me on the defense. I am annoyed that I can't drink my coffee while it's hot without being bossed around to do this and get me that. And then I end up drinking coffee that is room temperature.

Also, I get to frame my day before anyone else needs me. I have established my own little morning routine that works for me. I will share it but I want you to think about what you need in the mornings and create your own routine around what feels good for you.

So like I said, my alarm goes off at 4:30am. I am not the kind of person who jumps out of bed. I like to give myself a few minutes to wake up before I exit the bed. So I'm typically up out of bed by 4:45-5am. The earlier I get out of bed, the more time I get to myself which is ideal but I don't put much pressure to jump out of bed right when the alarm goes off.

Once I am out of bed, I plug in the coffee and drink 16 oz of water. I struggle with water consumption throughout the day so this ensures I start the day hydrating before coffee.

I do my morning journal, that I created for myself based on all the personal development I've done. On a side note, if you can't find what you're looking for then create it. That's what I did with this morning journal I do.

I'll give you a glimpse into what my morning journal entails but it can be as easy as grabbing a piece of paper and a pen and just writing what's on your mind. So first, I list 3 things I am grateful for. Then I do a self connection prayer where I declare what kind of person I want to be. After that I visualize 3 things I want from life and 3 things I need to complete that day. Then lastly I do my 10 I AM affirmations.

This process grounds me for the day ahead. I am intentional about who I need to be, what I need to get done and what I'm most grateful for.

Once that is complete, which takes usually no more than 15 mins then I listen to either a podcast or an audiobook for about 30 mins. This month, I've been squeezing in my 30 minute workout. And with time pending, I go on Instagram before the kids wake up.

By the time they wake up, I am ready to serve them :)

My top three tips to waking up early in the morning is this:

1. Go to bed earlier than you normally would. Force yourself if you have to. In order to get up earlier than you do, you need to go to bed early than you do. This will also establish a sleep routine for your body. I am asleep by 8:30pm in order to get up at my 4:30am time. You cannot expect yourself to get up at 5am when you're going to bed a midnight.

2. Figure out WHY it's important that you to get up earlier. What are the benefits of getting up earlier? How is your life better when you do? And alternatively, what suffers when you don't get up early? What is it costing you by not getting up? This is your purpose for climbing out of bed in the morning. Make it compelling. Tie all the joy to what it will bring and link all the pain if you don't.

3. Create a morning routine for yourself. Instead of just saying you "I need to get up earlier." What are you going to do to setup your day for success? And by success I mean what are you going to do that feels good to you? It's being purposeful with your morning, day and time. I explained my morning routine to you but you may want to experiment with what feels best for you.
